| TOUR: | The 2004 Tour will spotlight seven residences, including an 1857 townhouse renovation in progress, a brownstone featuring Arts and Crafts style interiors, a lovingly restored Victorian with loads of original details, a unique co-op created from the loading dock from the former Ex-Lax Factory, and an 1800’s carriage house with an Indian burial ground in the front yard; one commercial space – an inviting gardening shop with a stunning urban garden; and two spectacular private gardens.
|
| LEGENDS: | The Tour will also call attention to various “Legends of Boerum Hill” along the tour path, including sites of historic events and fascinating neighborhood lore. Legends were compiled by local historians Eric Fortmeyer, Dennis Holt, and L.J. Davis. A guided “Legends” tour will be conducted on the day of the house tour.

| RECEPTION EXHIBIT: |
At the end-of-tour reception at the Mugavero Center, Boerum Hill will pay tribute to the Mohawk Indian high-steel workers with a special exhibit detailing their many contributions to the neighborhood’s history. The Mohawk high-steel workers have lived in Boerum Hill while helping to build every major structure in New York City since 1917, e.g. the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center, Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, to name a few. A select group of students from the Cobble Hill School of American Studies, led by Special Education Coordinator Judy Alexander, is researching the Mohawks and their involvement in the neighborhood dating back to the early 20th Century and will present a video featuring the results of their efforts, including interviews with Mohawks still connected to downtown Brooklyn. The Cobble Hill School of American Studies is a high school (grades 9-12) where students follow a curriculum concentrated in social studies. The school has been operating for six years on Baltic Street between Smith and Hoyt Streets. |
