Right nearby in our Boerum Hill neighborhood, an interesting minor incident occurred in the spring of 1872 that was a remarkable example of many of the great issues going on in growing America then. A proprietor of a German 'lager beer garden' was fined $50 for running an "always open" beer hall and dancing club house that drove some of the neighbors nuts.
